Context and Memory in Second Language Learning
Research Question
How does training context influence the role of declarative and procedural memory in second language learning?
Approach
A controlled experimental study was conducted to compare language learning under explicit (instructed) and implicit (uninstructed) training conditions and to investigate how different learning environments interact with underlying memory systems.
Key Findings
Preliminary correlational analyses suggest that training context may influence which memory systems are more strongly associated with successful learning. Declarative memory showed stronger associations with language performance in explicit learning environments, suggesting a greater role for structured instruction and conscious rule formation. Procedural memory showed stronger associations in implicit learning environments, suggesting a greater role for repeated exposure and gradual linguistic pattern learning.
Why It Matters
Learning experiences are often designed as if one instructional approach works equally well across situations. This project suggests that different forms of language practice may engage different memory systems and highlights the potential value of combining explicit instruction with opportunities for repeated exposure when designing learning experiences.
